Dr Alan Derrick Leading

I was born 7th August 1951 in Flanshaw, Wakefield. My father worked for Wakefield City Police and my mother was a seamstress. I was educated at Lawfield Lane School and Thornes House. I studied medicine at Newcastle University and graduated MB BS in 1974. I did my house jobs in Hexham where I met my wife Pauline who had just qualified as a nurse. I stayed in the North East to complete vocational training for general practice working in hospitals and practices across Northumberland and Durham. I completed vocational training in 1978 during which I obtained a Diploma in Family Planning. Although not intending to return to Wakefield, I responded to an advert for a partner at Crofton and Sharlston, and was immediately offered the job which I accepted. In 1983, through examination, I became a Member of the Royal Society of General Practitioners. I have thoroughly  enjoyed working in this area. I have always wanted to be a trainer of doctors wanting to become GP’s and after many years of preparation I achieved this in 1994. Since this date we have trained 16 young and not so young doctors to become GP’s some of whom are working locally. Later I became a Course Organizer arranging the education for GP registrars and later the Tutor for the education of established GP’s. In 1999 I went back to Newcastle University on a part time basis to study again and obtained a Diploma in Advanced General Practice. I have worked through many important challenges to general practice and seen many changes and my enthusiasm remains. I feel particularly privileged to work in an area where my mothers father worked and indeed died a miner at Walton Colliery and my fathers father, who worked for the railways, spent time at Crofton sidings. My interests outside general practice include  wildlife, of which I am passionate, traveling, music and history. I also love languages, which despite having no natural aptitude, I gained a diploma in Spanish in 2002.

I was born in Hereford during WW2 where I lived until going to work for the pharmaceutical laboratories of May and Baker in Dagenham. I then entered Westminster Medical School in 1962 which at that time was the smallest medical school in Europe. It was here that I met Jennifer, the medical school cook, who in 1969 became my wife. We traveled much around England to various hospitals until settling as a partner in general practice at Warrengate Surgery in 1973. Here I remained until 2000 when I took retirement from NHS service. Over the past few years I have been engaged in locum service in many practices in West Yorkshire, a truly interesting time. Jenny and I have three children, all grown up now. I was delighted when Crofton and Sharlston practice asked if I would like to take the post as part time partner as I had grown to love working here as a locum over the years. I hope to be able to contribute, if only in some small way, to the continued smooth running of the practice.
